General Thimayya Museum, nestled in the heart of Coorg, has emerged as an indispensable facet of Coorg’s tourism landscape. Recently opened to the public, the General Thimayya Memorial Museum is a prominent attraction in Madikeri.
In this article, we delve into the essence of the museum, its location, and operating hours. Furthermore, you’ll have the privilege to glimpse some captivating photographs I had the opportunity to capture inside this remarkable museum.
General Thimayya Museum – A Tribute
General Kodendera Subayya Thimayya, an illustrious figure in Indian military history, served as the third Chief of Army Staff (COAS) from 1957 to 1967, a pivotal period leading up to the 1962 conflict with China.
General Thimayya’s exceptional accomplishments include being the sole Indian to command an infantry brigade during World War II, earning him the distinction of India’s most distinguished combat officer.
Thimayya’s ancestral residence in Madikeri, known as Sunny Side, has been lovingly transformed into a memorial museum to honour and commemorate his extraordinary life.
Here, the General Thimayya’s Museum houses rare collections of photographs and narratives, shedding light on his brilliant strategies and daring acts that continue to set the standard for professional soldiering and leadership.
Stepping into the museum complex, you will encounter decommissioned battle tanks and fighter jets. As you explore the interior of Sunny Side, you’ll be immersed in the history, adorned with traditional costumes and the very uniform worn by General Thimayya.
Furthermore, an impressive array of antique weapons, jewellery, and stamps from diverse countries awaits your discovery.
Photographs Captured at General Thimayya Museum
While my primary focus typically revolves around travel and food, I couldn’t resist sharing some intriguing insights into the T-55 Battle Tank and the MiG-21 Fighter and Interceptor Aircraft found within the museum.
T-55 Main Battle Tanks
The T-55 tanks played a pivotal role in India-Pakistan conflicts during the 1970s and 1980s, demonstrating remarkable effectiveness. Notably, Indian T-55s faced off against Pakistani M24 Chaffee Tanks and M47/48 tanks in several engagements, emerging victorious with minimal losses.
These historic battles underscore the strategic importance and effectiveness of Indian T-55 tanks during these conflicts.
Mikoyan Gurevich MiG-21
The MiG-21, a legendary fighter and interceptor aircraft of Soviet origin, boasts a remarkable aviation history. Its unparalleled production volume, spanning six decades and being the most produced supersonic jet aircraft, signifies its enduring significance in military aviation.
The MiG-21’s exceptional performance capabilities, including a maximum speed of 2,175 km/h, solidify its status as a high-speed and agile combat aircraft.

General Thimayya Museum Inauguration
Initially announced by the state government in 2006, the museum project faced various challenges. Thanks to the unwavering efforts of the Field Marshall Cariappa and General Thimayya Forum, it became a reality.
On February 6, 2021, the museum received a prestigious inauguration by the President of India, Ram Nath Kovind. His remarks during the ceremony underscored the museum’s role in commemorating the service and courage of one of India’s greatest soldiers.
