Our unexpected stay at the Thangam Grand Hotel in the temple city of Madurai led us to experience this centrally located establishment. Initially, we had concerns based on mixed online reviews, but practicality and proximity to the Madurai Meenakshi Temple swayed our decision.
The Thangam Grande Hotel Arrival and Check-In
Driving from Bangalore, we had no trouble finding the Thangam Grand Hotel thanks to Google Maps.
Surprisingly, there were no staff outside to assist with valet parking, and even the security personnel seemed to be seeking refuge from the sweltering heat. This didn’t align with our expectations for a star hotel.
Inside, the lobby was spacious and could easily accommodate a large crowd. However, it seemed rather empty during our visit.
The reception staff were welcoming and willing to negotiate on the room rates. After a bit of discussion, they offered us a deal that included a complimentary breakfast and 24-hour checkout for two rooms at 9,000 INR. We were exhausted from the journey and decided to settle in.
Thangam Grand Hotel Rooms
Our room was adequately sized with a large window, wooden furnishings, a comfortable bed, mirror, and wardrobe. A study table and chair were provided, though the absence of a notepad and pen was noticeable.
Basic amenities like a coffee maker, milk, coffee powder, sugar, and tea were available for caffeine enthusiasts. However, adjusting the air conditioner’s temperature proved tricky, and we had to seek assistance from the staff.
The restroom was clean, and we appreciated the “disinfected” label. Standard toiletries like shampoo and soap were provided, along with two towels.
Swimming Pool on the Terrace
Although we didn’t have the chance to visit, the hotel boasts a small swimming pool on the terrace.
Room Service
Room service was prompt, and we ordered light snacks, including a chicken sandwich and French fries, which arrived promptly.
Food at Thangam Grand Hotel
The highlight of our stay at Thangam Grand Hotel was undoubtedly the food. We were impressed by the taste, quality, and quantity of the dishes.
The complimentary breakfast, however, left us expecting more, as it only featured boiled eggs and cheese omelettes on request.
Traditional drink “Kammang Kool” was a satisfying addition. The spread included South Indian dishes like bread halwa, rava khichdi, medhu vada, aloo roti, idli, sambar, and chutney, as well as various dosa options. Overall, it was a decent breakfast spread.
The Ambience
The restaurant’s ambiance was pleasant, with well-decorated walls and ceilings, spacious wooden furniture, and air conditioning. It provided a perfect setting for a relaxed family meal, which is why we decided to have our lunch there as well.
Lunch at Thangam Grand Hotel
Every dish we ordered for lunch was outstanding, and we were thoroughly impressed with the culinary offerings.

Parking Facilities
Contrary to our initial concerns, the hotel had ample parking space behind the building. However, during the scorching summer months, vehicles tended to heat up quickly, necessitating a longer cool down period with the AC.
Thangam Grand Hotel Overall Experience
Our stay at Thangam Grand Hotel Madurai was pleasant, with no significant issues or complaints. It’s worth noting that online reviews vary, with some guests praising the hotel’s food, rooms, and services, while others found fault with room rates, AC performance, and staff behaviour.
Final Thoughts
In conclusion, our stay at Thangam Grand Hotel Madurai was enjoyable, and the highlight was undoubtedly the food.
While we would have preferred more competitive room rates, the overall experience was positive. If you’re considering a stay in Madurai, the Thangam Grand Hotel is a convenient option, but as always, it’s advisable to check online reviews and compare prices on TripAdvisor to find accommodation that suits your budget and preferences.
